The ground cable at the battery was DISCONNECTED.
Refer to the BMW Parts Diagram in the previous photo.
The screw (item 6) holding the starter cover in place was removed.
The rear of the starter cover (item 1) was pivoted outwards slightly and the starter cover was slide rearwards to disengage the locating pins at the front of the starter cover.
The connector at the rear of the plug-in socket (item 7) was disconnected by squeezing both tabs on the connector to clear the locking pins. The starter cover was set aside.
There are two rubber grommets (item 2) that install in the engine case that the starter cover locating pins slide into. They had a random tendency to either remain in the engine case or on the starter cover locating pins or fall off onto the ground.
The copper coloured nut (13 mm box end wrench) on the upper stud of the starter solenoid that fastens the battery cable to the solenoid stud was removed.
The copper coloured wave washer was removed from the stud of the starter solenoid.
The main wire lug was removed from the stud of the starter solenoid and positioned out of the way.
The "plate" pictured in the photo above was removed. This part was not to be used.
No corrosion of any kind was noticed on any of the associated parts.
